To achieve the standards outlined in the Final Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, the department will clearly articulate its mission of trusted service with respect and define what that mission means in the practice of professional policing through clear policies, protocols, decision-making, and expectations. These clarifications include:
- Responding to resistance and aggression
- De-escalation
- Implicit bias
- Mental health crisis response
- Demonstrations, protest and free speech

The department closely follows procedures outlined in the Peace Officer Discipline Procedures Act (PODPA), established labor contracts, department policies, and civil service rules to provide due process and procedural predictability in all cases.
