Brookfield Renewable Power Inc.
Brookfield Renewable Power Inc.’s Twin Cities Hydroelectric Facility, formerly owned by Ford Motor Company, is located in the Highland Park neighborhood of Saint Paul, along the lower banks of the Mississippi River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished the dam in 1917, which was built in anticipation of environmentally sustainable hydropower. The promise of cheap hydropower was the chief reason Henry Ford decided to build the plant in Saint Paul along the Mississippi River. Ford completed construction of the hydro plant in 1924 at a cost of about $1 million. The power plant was acquired by Brookfield Renewable Power Inc. in April 2008 and currently produces a maximum of 18 megawatts of energy, enough to power about 14,400 homes for a year. The power generated by the facility is sold into the Midwestern wholesale electricity market. For more information or questions regarding the Twin Cities Hydroelectric Facility, visit Brookfield.com.
