One person is dead and police officers are searching for another after a late afternoon shooting on Saint Paul’s East Side.
At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, multiple 911 callers reported shots being fired in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 800 block of Hazel Street North.
Officers arrived quickly and found a male lying in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. St. Paul Fire medics pronounced him dead a short time later.
As a group of officers secured the scene to preserve evidence, others were joined by the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter in searching for the suspect in the surrounding neighborhood. As of Monday night, no arrests have been made.
Investigators with the police department’s homicide unit are currently working to identify possible witnesses while members of the forensic services unit collect and document evidence. The video management unit will also be looking for any nearby surveillance video that could help identify anyone who may have been involved.
Investigators do not believe this was random. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call 651-266-5650.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the victim and determine an exact cause of death. That information, along with any updates in the case, will be released on the police department’s Twitter page, @sppdmn.
This is the 16th homicide this year in Saint Paul.
