A person called 911 early Friday, April 1, 2022, to report that a man had been shot while attempting to break into a home in Saint Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood.
The 911 call came into the Ramsey County Emergency Communications Center at about 1:40 a.m., reporting a shooting on the 1200 block of Hewitt Avenue.
Officers rushed to the scene and found a 56-year-old man waiting for them down the street from where the shooting occurred. He told them a man in his 30s had kicked in his front door, entered the home and threatened his daughter, with whom the intruder had a relationship.
Once officers secured the resident of the home, they went inside the dwelling and found a man in his 30s who’d been shot multiple times. Saint Paul Fire medics were called in, and they pronounced the man dead without transporting him to a hospital.
The resident of the home was brought to Saint Paul police headquarters, questioned and released. Members of the department’s homicide and forensic services units continue to investigate the shooting, and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for charging considerations. At this time, no arrests have been made.
The identification of the man who died, along with any updates on the case, will be released on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account, @sppdmn.
This is the 13th homicide of 2022 in Saint Paul.
