Mattress Recycling Overview

At no additional cost, you can request an unlimited number of collections for mattresses, box springs, and metal bed frames to be recycled.

The City of Saint Paul partners with Second Chance Recycling and the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Center. This partnership allows us to collect and recycle mattresses and box springs. We offer this service in an effort to keep these materials out of the landfill. Mattress and box spring pick-up comes at no additional cost to all Saint Paul residents.

The City of Saint Paul and Second Chance Recycling recycled over 9,200 mattresses in 2024.

Palettes sit in a warehouse stacked high with used mattresses.

Mattresses: Instructions for Collection

Label Items

Please attach a sign specifying that the mattress is for the recycling program.

Place Outside

Place all items outside by 6 a.m. Mattresses must be visible and easily accessible for collection.

  • You can place them on your front boulevard or along your alley.
  • If it's your normal garbage and recycling collection day, don't place the mattress and affiliated items by your containers to avoid it being collected as garbage.

Need to Cancel Collection?

If you need to change or cancel your collection and live in a property with one to four units, email citycurbside@emerge-mn.org. If you need to modify your collection service and live in a property with five or more units, notify your property owner or manager.
