Q: I want to work a Right Track internship this summer. How do I apply?
A: The Youth Application for summer internships is open February 1st - February 28th. If you want to be eligible for a summer internship, you must fill out the application.
Q: If I'm already working a Right Track School Year internship, do I still need to apply for a summer internship?
A: Yes. You must reapply, even if you are currently working.
Q: What does YJ1 mean?
A: YJ is short for Youth Jobs. YJ1 is Saint Paul's youth internship program that is most often for youth who don't have any or very much work experience. YJ1 is for youth ages 14 - 19.
Q: What types of jobs does YJ1 offer?
A: YJ1 partners with a variety of City departments and non-profit organizations around Saint Paul to offer a variety of different internships, many of which are usually “hands on” experiences. Some of our partners include: Saint Paul Parks and Recreation (Recreation Centers, Aquatics, Como Zoo and Conservatory), Saint Paul Public Libraries, Boys & Girls Club, Conservation Corps, Science Museum, SPNN, Urban Boatbuilders, Urban Roots, YWCA and many more!
Q: What is the process for obtaining a YJ1 internship with Right Track?
A: First, apply for the program. If you are eligible, you will then sign-up for a mandatory pre-employment training, offered in March. Once you have completed the training, you will be invited to Career Exploration Day to meet with prospective employers and set up interviews. After you interview with an employer, you may be offered an internship. If you are matched with an employer you will be required to complete all the necessary payroll paperwork.
If you are not matched with an internship, you will have the opportunity to enroll in our online professional development program (space is limited).
Q: Does everyone get a YJ1 internship?
A: We typically have about 2,000 applicants for around 500 internships, so unfortunately, not everyone will get matched with a YJ1 internship. If you are not matched with a internship, you will have the opportunity to enroll in our online professional development program (space is limited).
Q: How can I increase my chances of getting matched with a YJ1 internship?
A: Complete the youth application accurately. Attend and pay close attention at the training session. Participate in Career Exploration and get your a resume ready. Be prepared to ask and answer meaningful questions. Actively participate in your interview. Be excited yet serious about this experience, as employers will want to hire youth that are confident, enthusiastic, and professional.
Q: If I get matched with a internship, what paperwork do I need?
A: If you get matched with an internship, you will need to complete a Right Track participation form (parent signature needed if under 18), income affidavit, and a payroll packet. Click here to learn what documents you need for the payroll packet.
Q: If I have additional questions, who can I ask?
A: Send an email to RightTrack@ci.stpaul.mn.us or give us a call at 651.266.6363
