What Is a Police Report?

A police report is an official record of an interaction between the police and the public. The Saint Paul Police Department creates police reports to:

  • Capture details of an incident to investigate as a potential crime,
  • Document the facts of an accident, or
  • Make a record of property that comes into police custody.

⚠️ Because a police report is an official document, filing a false police report is a crime.

You can file a police report in person by having an officer come to you, or by visiting a police station. For some kinds of incidents, you can also file a police report online. Learn how.

File a Police Report Online

When to use online reporting

Online reporting makes it faster and easier to report certain common incidents to SPPD. You can file a police report online when all these conditions are true:

  • You are 18 or older and have a valid email address.
  • You are not reporting a stolen firearm, a stolen vehicle, or stolen license plates.
  • You are not reporting a crime motivated by bias. (What does that mean?)
  • The incident happened within the City of Saint Paul, not on an interstate highway or at MSP airport. (What do I do then?)

If your situation does not meet the conditions for online reporting, don’t worry. As long as the incident happened within the City of Saint Paul, you can still file your report in person, at your location or at a police station.

Tips for filing an online police report

  • Recognize the system. We use a system called CopLogic for online police reports. Your browser will show an address that includes “secure.coplogic.com” and an image with the words “ST. PAUL POLICE” at the top.
  • Gather info ahead of time. The report form will ask for detailed information about the incident you are reporting. Gather as much information as you can to make filling out the form go faster. It is especially helpful to provide information like this:
    • the serial number of a missing item
    • contact information of a suspect
    • contact information of witnesses to the incident
  • Use a computer. The report form is long and requires a lot of typing. It is possible to file online using a phone or a tablet, but it is much better to use a computer that has a keyboard. The system works best with the Chrome browser, with cookies turned on and pop-up blockers turned off.

If you already filed an online report and want to add information:

Supplemental Report

Please note: You will need your case number to file a supplemental report. (The case number has numbers only. You may not use your tracking number that starts with "T." )

What Happens When You File a Police Report

Online only: Receive a tracking number

After you file an online police report, you will receive a temporary tracking number by email. This number will start with “T.” This is not a case number, just a way to track your online report.

SPPD reviews the report

Once you have submitted your report, a Saint Paul police investigator will review it.

  • If the investigator determines there is nothing more for the police to do, we will keep your report on file it as an official record.
  • If your report is approved for further investigation, we will assign it a permanent case number. This is a nine-digit number starting with the last two digits of the year. You may need to give your case number to an insurance company or bank. You will also need your case number to follow up on your report.

To check on the status of a report you have submitted, call our Records Unit at 651-266-5700.

If needed: An investigator contacts you

Depending on the circumstance of your case, an SPPD investigator might be in touch to follow up.
