Description of Work
General Duty Statement
Performs skilled work in operating, maintaining and repairing the hot mix asphalt facility and associated equipment and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received
Works under the technical, general, and/or administrative supervision of a unit or division manager.
Supervision Exercised
May exercise technical supervision over lower-level support, technical, or professional staff.
Typical Duties Performed
The listed examples may not include all the duties performed by all positions in this class.
- Mixes asphalt batches by operating levers, switches and controls, controlling the heat, amount of aggregate, asphalt and oil flowing into the weighing chamber.
- Checks, repairs and maintains components of plant to assure safe operation and compliance with pollution control regulations.
- Weighs materials according to prescribed formulas; mixes weighed materials in mechanical mixer.
- Dumps asphalt mixes through chute into trucks.
- Requisitions and maintains a supply of material for the proper and efficient operation of the plant.
- Operates front end loader and other equipment to unload, stockpile, and feed agregates.
- Operates front end loader with attachments and other equipment to unload deliveries, make facility repairs, and maintain plant.
- Transfers fuels and bituminous materials from tanker to storage tanks.
- Places chemical in settling tanks daily and cleans out tanks as needed.
- Takes and records scale, meter, and other readings and records production data.
Competencies
- Considerable skill in the maintenance, repair and operation of machines and equipment used in the production of asphalt mixes.
- Working skill in operating a front end loader and other heavy equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the safe operation of machines and equipment used in the production of asphalt mixes.
- Thorough knowledge of properties of materials used in the production of asphalt mixes.
- Considerable ability to learn the laws and regulations concerning pollution control.
- Considerable ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Working ability to operate equipment in adverse weather conditions.
Requirements
One year's experience in the repair, maintenance and operation of an asphalt plant or two years' experience operating heavy equipment in the application and/or surfacing of asphalt. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no suspensions or revocations during the two year period prior to the date of appointment (suspensions for parking related offenses excluded) with no restrictions for air brakes.
