Description of Work
General Duty Statement
As a trainee, performs entry-level professional work in architecture, landscape architecture, or civil-engineering. Assists in conducting field surveys, research, and analyzing data for site conditions and restrictions, construction requirements, and materials and methods used. Assists other staff in preparing plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates, and construction drawings and documents. Aids with construction inspections, administering contracts and developing reports. Performs other related duties as required.

Works under the close supervision of a unit supervisor.

- Demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles, terms, techniques, procedures, and practices of architecture, landscape architecture, or civil engineering theories, principles, techniques, and standards.
- Demonstrates an ability to perform moderately complex engineering calculations. Demonstrates an ability to prepare basic engineering designs, models, maps, plans or drawings. Demonstrates an ability to resolve elementary problems associated with the work.
- Demonstrates an ability to identify basic risks and liability implications. Demonstrates an ability to refer common legal issues to professional staff or supervisory authority.
- Demonstrates an understanding of technological advances in applications for the assigned work area. Demonstrates an ability to use computer software for the creation of drawings and graphics, information retrieval, and CAD and GIS data manipulation. Demonstrates, for an assigned work area, an ability to use office equipment. Demonstrates an ability to learn the use of drafting, inspection, and surveying tools.
- Demonstrates an ability to prioritize own work and meet deadlines while preparing report information, conducting field surveys, or researching and analyzing results.
- Demonstrates an ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and interact within a diverse work group. Demonstrates an ability to listen to and speak with contractors, the general public and staff customers.

Requirements
Must have completed the third year of a university-based curriculum in Architecture or Landscape Architecture, or the second year in a Civil Engineering curriculum.
