Description of Work
General Duty Statement
Under supervision of a Journeyman Electrician, to be trained in electrical work involved in the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electronic and electrical systems, instruments, apparatus and equipment; and to perform related work as assigned.
Supervision Received
Works under the close supervision of a unit supervisor.

Typical Duties Performed
The listed examples may not include all the duties performed by all positions in this class. - To renew lights and globes on ornamental posts.
- To make minor repairs to lighting systems.
- To act as helper to Electrician.
- To dig trenches and lay conduits.
- To mix concrete for post bases and for repairing streets and sidewalks torn up in the process of installing standards.
- To operate an aerial lift truck.
- To wash globes and replace glass.
- To assist in installing, maintaining, and repairing generators, motors, switchboards, control boards, cut-outs, wall, floor, and ceiling receptacles, conduits, meters, fuse boxes, lights, fans, heaters, bell and buzzer systems, fire alarm systems, signal systems, and all electrical equipment and appliances.
- To assist in installing, constructing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying electrical devices which have circuits involving vacuum tubes or transistors, or solid state circuitry.
- To assist in installing, maintaining and repairing such equipment as solid state controllers, recorders, detectors, P.A. systems, opticom units and radar units used in operating and controlling traffic signals.
- To assist in installing, maintaining and repairing such equipment as solid state records, excitor motors, boiler controls, battery chargers, and motor controls used in operating and controlling pumping equipment used in the Water Utility's distribution system.
- To assist in doing interior and exterior wiring and overhead and underground line work.
- To assist in locating trouble on a street lighting circuit and making the necessary repairs.
- To assist in repairing street lighting fixtures, switches and relays which are out of order.
- To assist in assembling, wiring and repairing transformers.
- To assist in repairing high tension cables.
Competencies
Requirements
Successful completion of the Electrical Trainee Program at St. Paul Technical Vocational Institute or an equivalent training program. Must be an indentured and registered apprentice electrician with the State of Minnesota.
