Youth Job Corps

Youth Job Corps

The
Youth Job Corps (YJC) program is designed for youth 14-21 who are interested in career exploration and summer employment. The jobs created through the YJC provide needed community services during the summer months with work sites scattered throughout the City. Qualified candidates for this program will have the opportunity to work in a variety of industries.

  • All applicants must be residents of Saint Paul
  • Youth ages 14-21 are eligible to apply
  • Youth who are thirteen may also apply if they will turn fourteen by June 15, 2009
  • Household income must be at or below 80% of the metro area median income
  • Applying to the YJC does not guarantee you employment
  • Most jobs begin June 15, 2009 and end September 4, 2009

Acceptance into the Youth Job Corps

  • The applicant must qualify using the criteria above
  • The application must be complete. The main reason youth do not qualify is because their application is not complete, or is completed incorrectly. Pay particular attention to page 4 of the application. All sections on page 4 must be completed accurately. Also, make sure there are signatures where required
  • Positions must be available. If there are no positions available you will be placed on a waiting list

Work Readiness Training

  • Accepted applicants will be required to attend mandatory job skills and work-readiness training. These sessions give YJC participants the skills and knowledge to be successful in their jobs. At these sessions the applicant will learn, among other things, job safety, building a resume, interviewing skills, money management skills and what is expected of an employer and employee.
  • After the work readiness training the applicant will receive a letter in the mail with a supervisor’s name to call. The applicant will have one week to call that supervisor and arrange to be interviewed.  If the interview goes well, the applicant will devise a work schedule with that supervisor. If the interview did not go well, and principals taught at the work readiness training were not used, the applicant will be required to attend the work readiness training again.

Jobs Available

  • Youth Job Corps participants work in a variety of positions, such as gardening, recreation assistants, park operations assistants, landscaping, data entry, and general office assistants.
  • When completing the application you will be asked about your interests. We will make every effort to place you in a job that best meets your interests. We will also make every effort to place you at a work site no more than two miles from your home address.
  • Applying to the YJC program does not guarantee you employment.

Wage Information

  • All YJC positions are paid.
  • Youth 14-18 are paid minimum wage ($6.55 an hour rising to $7.25 on 7/18/09).
