Mayor Chris Coleman praised the Saint Paul Police Department today following a historic number of applicants applying to serve in the City of Saint Paul.
“The amount and diversity of applicants reinforces what we have known all along—that the Saint Paul Police Department is second to none. Saint Paul attracts so many quality candidates because we have a professional, effective police force that is active in the community—the kind of force that good cops want to be a part of. Chief Smith and the City of Saint Paul should be very proud of what these numbers reflect," Mayor Chris Coleman said.
Following robust recruitment by the city, nearly 800 (795) people applied for openings in the Saint Paul Police Department. Twenty-three percent of the candidates were people of color.
"We have built a skilled police force with strong community ties," said Saint Paul Police Chief Tom Smith. “We are proud of the number of people who recognize that and are looking to join our law enforcement family."
In 2011, the last year the city recruited for candidates, the police department received 705 applicants. There were 339 applicants in 2009.
Because of changes in PERA rules for retirees, the city expects as many as 60 vacancies in the police department due to retirements this year.
A similar percentage of retirements are expected within the Saint Paul Fire Department due to the same PERA changes. As a result, the city has begun actively recruiting candidates for anticipated positions in the fire department. Applicants interested in applying should visit www.stpaul.gov/firefighter. The city will begin accepting firefighter applications in May 2014.
