Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman today announced the completion of the 6th Street sidewalk expansion, a priority he outlined in his 2013 budget address.
“We have seen an exponential growth in Lowertown’s vitality. The Lowertown neighborhood is reaching its tipping point, with the help of events like Music in Mears, the construction of the Lowertown Ballpark, and great bars and restaurants. The expanded 6th Street sidewalk makes the most of current investments and will also help bring new ones. It will be such a pleasure to enjoy a drink on the patio overlooking Mears Park this summer,” Mayor Chris Coleman said.
“We are excited to finally meet the demand for outdoor seating as soon as the weather is warm enough,” Matt Lokowich, owner of the Bulldog restaurant and bar, said. “Thanks to Mayor Coleman for his leadership in making this happen. This expanded sidewalk is a crucial part of continuing Lowertown’s vitality, and will help keep our business strong.”
The sidewalk expansion began this spring and was completed this week. The project turned the three-lane street into two lanes to make room for dining space on the sidewalk. An official celebration marking the sidewalk’s opening will be scheduled for the spring of 2014.
