Mayor Coleman recognizes Saint Paul’s 1,000+ AmeriCorps members
The Mayor spent his day visiting local service sites as part of the Mayors’ Day of Recognition for National Service

Mayor Chris Coleman spent his day today visiting three local sites where many of the more than 1,000 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers who serve Saint Paul work to the benefit of the city’s communities, students and residents. The Mayor’s visits were part of a national day of recognition in which more than 800 mayors from across the country, representing more than 100 million Americans, paid tribute to the irreplaceable service of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members in their local communities.

"Today in Saint Paul, we celebrated the more than 1,000 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members whose countless contributions to our youth and families, neighborhoods and communities play a critical role in Saint Paul's vitality,” Mayor Coleman said. “The selfless work of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members is indispensable to our community as a whole and the individuals they serve.”

Laysha Ward, President of Community Relations for Target and Board Chair of the Corporation for National and Community Service, joined the Mayor at his first two stops. The Mayor’s first stop was Jackson Elementary School, where he visited with AmeriCorps VISTA, Reading Corps and Promise Fellow members whose work is crucial to teaching reading skills to children. He also visited Lutheran Social Services, where Senior Corps members help elderly residents to live independently, and YouthCARE-- a multicultural organization dedicated to helping urban youth develop the life skills needed to make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Following through with his commitment to truly recognize the crucial work of these service members, Mayor Coleman issued a proclamation today declaring April 9, 2013 to be “National Service Recognition Day” in the City of Saint Paul.
