Northern Catalpa

Hamline Avenue South

Hamline Avenue Catalpa

The catalpa is one of the most visually striking trees in the Minnesota landscape and this tree at 321 Hamline Avenue South is no exception.  The large heart-shaped leaves, heavily fragrant white orchid like flowers, and elongated bean pods provide year round interest.  The tree's canopy, supported on a trunk that measures just over 5 feet in diameter, rises above the surrounding urban forest serving as a neighborhood landmark.  Planted at the southeast corner of the house the tree provides shade, mitigating summer temperatures and reducing cooling costs for the homeowner.
