Saint Paul Regional Water Services holds annual water tower open house
Saint Paul Water Regional Water Services is pleased to announce the annual open house at the historic Highland Water Tower.
The tower doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21, in conjunction with Highland Fest.
The water tower is a Highland Park neighborhood landmark located at the intersection of Snelling Avenue and Ford Parkway.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Visitors are invited to climb the 151-step staircase inside the tower to the observation deck.
The deck offers stunning views of the Highland area, the Twin Cities, and the Mississippi River, providing an excellent opportunity for photographs and a fun family outing.
The tower’s observation deck provides visitors with a spectacular view of the area, particularly looking down on the changing colors of the trees dotting the Highland Park golf course below and out toward the Mississippi River.
On a clear day, visitors can see airplanes lifting off from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport to the south. The scene stretches from the Saint Paul city skyline on the east to the Minneapolis skyline on the west.
The tower, which was designed by Clarence W. “Cap” Wigington, was completed in 1928. Wigington, an architect for the city of Saint Paul from 1915 to 1949, also designed many other important structures in the area, including the Keller Golf Course Clubhouse (1929), the Saint Paul Public Safety Building (1929–30), and the Como Park Pavilion (1934).
The construction of the Highland Water Tower includes facings of Kasota and Bedford stone and a riveted steel-plate tank with a capacity of 200,000 gallons. The tower is still used today to help supply water in the Highland area. A collection of several original Highland Tower blueprints, many of which bear Wigington’s signature, will be displayed inside the tower.
The open house is designed to inform residents about municipal water and the efforts of the utility to preserve and protect water resources. Information about the utility’s water treatment process and distribution system will be available.
Utility employees will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about utility services.
The next open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 - 13, 2013.
