Critical Incident Debriefing
Critical Incident: Any traumatic event or incident of a critical nature where serious injury or death resulted during police custody or involvement. Critical incidents are traumatic in nature and cause powerful emotional reactions in people who are exposed to those events.
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides Critical Incident Debriefing (CID) for St Paul and surrounding police agencies.
The Critical Incident Debriefing (CID) Processes:
(1) Immediately following the critical incident, anyone directly involved in the incident will meet individually with an EAP director, or an EAP representative at headquarters (HQ). The role of EAP is to make sure each officer directly involved is provided support and services needed to help the officers involved normalize the incident.
(2) Within 48 hours, everyone directly involved in the incident will meet with a contracted licensed professional. The EAP director will make the appointment.
(3) Within 72 hours, everyone directly involved in the critical incident will attend a general individual or group debriefing facilitated by the EAP director, or an EAP representative and a clinical licensed professional.
