  • Install and maintain working smoke alarms
  • Plan and practice a fire escape
  • Make sure children practice what to do
  • Never leave cooking or candles unattended
  • Keep cooking surfaces clean and free from grease
  • Never smoke in bed or while taking medications that may make you drowsy
  • Keep combustibles away from heat sources
  • Keep matches and lighters out of children’s sight
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn
  • Run cold water over burned skin and nothing else (if the skin is blistered or charred, see your doctor immediately)
  • Keep an eye on your electrical items and notice the warning signs of an unsafe electrical system
  • Smoke rises, so crawl on the floor to stay under the smoke
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire
