Internship Opportunities
The Office of Mayor Chris Coleman offers unpaid, full or part-time internships to undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled at an accredited college or university. Recent graduates will also be considered. Those selected will have the opportunity to work closely with local government appointees to explore the many facets that engage residents and make Saint Paul the Most Livable City in America. Applicants must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs. The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They will also have good customer service experience and a dedication to public service. The City of Saint Paul is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Responsibilities:
•    Supporting administrative staff: answering phones, entering data, sorting mail and filing.
•    Supporting policy and outreach staff: attending meetings and events, conducting research, communicating with constituents and key community groups, conducting research, drafting letters and memos and writing reports.
•    Supporting government relations staff:  monitor bills and committees at the State Capitol, research and write reports on legislation, organize meetings and events.
•    Supporting media staff: compiling news clips, conducting research, and writing press releases, briefing memos, talking points and correspondence.

Mayor’s Office internships provide students with valuable work experience for professional careers. Interns have the opportunity to work with and assist various divisions of the Mayor’s Office, including administrative, policy, government relations, outreach, and press staff.

Hours and compensation:  All internships are unpaid. Part-time (15-20 hours per week) and full-time internships are available year-round (Sept-Dec, Jan-May, June-Aug).

Public Information Office Internship

This position will assist in creating and developing communications tools ranging from newsletters, brochures and rack cards to online blogs, Facebook and Twitter postings and other social media.  This internship will be a great opportunity for students looking to use graphic design and communications skills in a real world setting.

A successful design intern must be an organized, detail-oriented, creative thinker with strong communication, production and design skills. They should possess the ability to follow through with tasks and clearly communicate status of assigned tasks with supervisor. 

We are seeking a recent graduate, junior or senior working toward a degree in Graphic Design, or related program. 

Experience with media software:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (CS5) and proficient with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. (PC platform)
  • Premiere or other video editing software a plus.

Some knowledge and familiarity with pre-press production helpful but not necessary. Understanding of and ability to work with digital images, largely photographs, a must.

Duties and Responsibilities could include:

  • Post images and short, interesting items on social media sites
  • Scan historical images, index them for future retrieval,  and incorporate select images into public displays
  • Film and edit short, educational videos for YouTube
  • Create branding materials using graphic design programs
  • Customize, develop and update graphic design elements using the PC platform
  • Assist in designing and developing brochures, rack cards, newsletters, reports, booklets, and other print media
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Highly proficient using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign
  • Microsoft Office programs, especially PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of branding and design
  • Strong writing, proof-reading and editing skills (for external products)
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills (for internal office)
  • Creative and innovative thinker
  • Strong organizational ability
  • Excellent research skills
