Importance of the U.S. Census Did you know that Saint Paul lost an estimated $35.9 million dollars in federal funding as a result of an undercount of our population in the 2000 Census? That's $1000 per person per year for 10 years!
What is the 2010 Census?
The Census is a count of all residents living in the United States.
The Census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
The Census is taken every 10 years.
The 2010 Census will take place on April 1, 2010.
Census questionnaire forms will be sent to every address in the nation.
For the first time in history, it will take less than 10 minutes to complete the form.
Be Counted
During these tough economic times, it is even more crucial to have a complete and accurate count of our population. For every person counted, the federal government allocates $1000 per person per year for 10 years and this money goes directly back to the community where the individuals live, work, and raise a family. With this allocation of federal resources, the City of Saint Paul is able to provide and maintain basic and essential services to residents of Saint Paul such as snow plowing, sewer maintenance, and public safety.
A complete and accurate count:
Determines how federal dollars are distributed back to communities
Impacts the development of new businesses, highways, and schools
Affects hospital services, health programs, and public transportation
Determines the number congressional seats per state and how many representatives we have in Congress who can advocate on our behalf
Mayor's 2010 Census Task Force
Mayor Chris Coleman established the Mayor's 2010 Census Task Force in March 2009. The task force is made up of representatives from various community organizations serving diverse populations who were appointed to serve on the task force until August 2010.
The goal of the Mayor's 2010 Census Task Force is to ensure that every single resident in Saint Paul is represented and counted accurately. View Task Force.
