The Youth Commission’s subcommittee work is guided by the Saint Paul Youth Policy Platform. Every two years, the Youth Commission brings together passionate youth from throughout the city who are dedicated to improving their communities. In Feburary 2009 the Youth Commission held its second Youth Summit and revised its Youth Policy Platform. The platform states the 5 most important issues that young people want to address with adults and elected officials.
Current subcommittee work:
- College Access – This subcommittee is writing letters to State and Federal MN representatives about education related issues that concern us. We are writing on four separate issues; our support for lower counselor to student ratio, MN Dream Act, Upward Bound available to more high school students, and maintaining the current guidelines of the 21st Century Grant.
- Discrimination – This subcommittee partnered with the Highland Park Senior High School Gay-Straight Alliance to organize an awareness assembly during PRIDE week. The goal of this assembly is to advocate for equal rights within the GLBT community and to bring more meaning to Day of Silence. The group brought in two local spoken word and slam poets to perform at the assembly as well as performed their own pieces.
- Mapping – This subcommittee is partnering with LinkUp Saint Paul, a web database that will compile all afterschool, weekend and summer program opportunities for Saint Paul youth. The group has participated in the name, design, and data entry of the website. (LinkUp Saint Paul will be launching late summer 2010!)
Any youth in 7th -12th grade living in Saint Paul can join a subcommittee and become a Youth Commissioner.
