The City of Saint Paul, Department of Safety and Inspections
(DSI) administers the written examination at its offices located on the 2nd Floor of 375 Jackson Street, Suite 220. If you have questions regarding the written examination or would like to make an appointment to take the exam, please call (651) 266-8989. Appointments can be scheduled Tuesday and Thursday between 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. OR 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
There is a $35 fee for the initial exam or retake. Exam fees must be paid before taking the exam.
The written exam has 100 questions and consists of two parts. The first part is 56 multiple choice and true/false questions covering areas such as hygiene, technique, and physiology. The second part consists of 44 questions and covers the identification of bones and muscles. A combined score of 75% or higher is required to pass.
