1. Can I install my own ductwork?

Yes, a homeowner / homesteader can do this work provided that he or she has acquired the proper permits and is aware that the work must be "code compliant". All work must be inspected and approved before a permit can be finalized. Please, call the warm air inspectors at (651) 266-9006 between 7:30 am - 9:00 am, Monday - Friday for an inspection.

2. Who can install a bathroom exhaust fan?

The exhaust fan itself must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor. The exhaust duct may be installed by either a competency card-carrying installer or a homeowner / homesteader. In either case, a ventilation permit must be acquired and the work be done by persons knowledgeable of the code requirements.

3. Why is a heat loss calculation required when applying for a furnace replacement permit?

The Minnesota Energy Code limits the over sizing of warm air heating systems. Also, a heat loss calculation verifies that the correct amount of air is being delivered to each room.

4. When is a "room by room" heat loss calculation required?

Whenever a new ducted system is installed or a gravity system is being replaced with a new ducted system.

5. Who can vent a furnace, water heater, or boiler?

This work can be done with a permit by any of the following:
1. A sheet metal worker (with a warm air / vent card)
2. A gas fitter (with a gas card)
3. A plumber
4. A homeowner / homesteader
